Thestorystarts:Iwasatafriendshouse,andshehadonhershelfacopyoftheDSMmanual,whichisthemanualofmentaldisorders.Itlistseveryknownmentaldisorder.Anditusedtobe,backinthe50s,averyslimpamphlet.Andthenitgotbiggerandbiggerandbigger,andnowitspageslong.Anditlistscurrentlymentaldisorders.

SoIwasleafingthroughit,wonderingifIhadanymentaldisorders,anditturnsoutIvegot12.

Ivegotgeneralizedanxietydisorder,whichisagiven.Ivegotnightmaredisorder,whichiscategorizedifyouhaverecurrentdreamsofbeingpursuedordeclaredafailure,andallmydreamsinvolvepeoplechasingmedownthestreetgoing,"Youreafailure!"

Ivegotparent-childrelationalproblems,whichIblamemyparentsfor.

Imkidding.Imnotkidding.Imkidding.AndIvegotmalingering.AndIthinkitsactuallyquiteraretohavebothmalingeringandgeneralizedanxietydisorder,becausemalingeringtendstomakemefeelveryanxious.

Anyway,Iwaslookingthroughthisbook,wonderingifIwasmuchcrazierthanIthoughtIwas,ormaybeitsnotagoodideatodiagnoseyourselfwithamentaldisorderifyourenotatrainedprofessional,ormaybethepsychiatryprofessionhasakindofstrangedesiretolabelwhatsessentiallynormalhumanbehaviorasamentaldisorder.

Ididntknowwhichofthesewastrue,butIthoughtitwaskindofinteresting,andIthoughtmaybeIshouldmeetacriticofpsychiatrytogettheirview,whichishowIendeduphavinglunchwiththeScientologists.

ItwasamancalledBrian,whorunsacrackteamofScientologistswhoaredeterminedtodestroypsychiatrywhereveritlies.TheyrecalledtheCCHR.AndIsaidtohim,"Canyouprovetomethatpsychiatryisapseudo-sciencethatcantbetrusted?"Andhesaid,"Yes,wecanproveittoyou."AndIsaid,"How?"Andhesaid,"WeregoingtointroduceyoutoTony."

AndIsaid,"WhosTony?"Andhesaid,"TonysinBroadmoor."Now,BroadmoorisBroadmoorHospital.ItusedtobeknownastheBroadmoorAsylumfortheCriminallyInsane.Itswheretheysendtheserialkillers,andthepeoplewhocanthelpthemselves.AndIsaidtoBrian,"Well,whatdidTonydo?"

Andhesaid,"Hardlyanything.Hebeatsomeoneuporsomething,andhedecidedtofakemadnesstogetoutofaprisonsentence.Buthefakedittoowell,andnowhesstuckinBroadmoorandnobodywillbelievehessane.DoyouwantustotryandgetyouintoBroadmoortomeetTony?"SoIsaid,"Yes,please."

SoIgotthetraintoBroadmoor.IbegantoyawnuncontrollablyaroundKemptonPark,whichapparentlyiswhatdogsalsodowhenanxious,theyyawnuncontrollably.AndwegottoBroadmoor.AndIgottakenthroughgateaftergateaftergateaftergateintothewellnesscenter,whichiswhereyougettomeetthepatients.ItlookslikeagiantHamptonInn.

Itsallpeachandpineandcalmingcolors.Andtheonlyboldcolorsaretheredsofthepanicbuttons.Andthepatientsstarteddriftingin.Andtheywerequiteoverweightandwearingsweatpants,andquitedocile-looking.AndBriantheScientologistwhisperedtome,"Theyremedicated,"which,totheScientologists,isliketheworstevilintheworld,butImthinkingitsprobablyagoodidea.

AndthenBriansaid,"HeresTony."Andamanwaswalkingin.Andhewasntoverweight,hewasinverygoodphysicalshape.Andhewasntwearingsweatpants,hewaswearingapinstripesuit.AndhehadhisarmoutstretchedlikesomeoneoutofTheApprentice.Helookedlikeamanwhowantedtowearanoutfitthatwouldconvincemethathewasverysane.

Andhesatdown.AndIsaid,"Soisittruethatyoufakedyourwayinhere?"Andhesaid,"Yep.Yep.Absolutely.IbeatsomeoneupwhenIwas17.AndIwasinprisonawaitingtrial,andmycellmatesaidtome,Youknowwhatyouhavetodo?Fakemadness.Tellthemyouremad,youllgetsenttosomecushyhospital.Nurseswillbringyoupizzas,youllhaveyourownPlayStation."Isaid,"Well,howdidyoudoit?"Hesaid,"Well,Iaskedtoseetheprisonpsychiatrist.

Anyway,hefakedmadnesstoowell,hesaid.Andtheydidntsendhimtosomecushyhospital.TheysenthimtoBroadmoor.Andtheminutehegotthere,saidhetookonelookattheplace,askedtoseethepsychiatrist,said,"Theresbeenaterriblemisunderstanding.Imnotmentallyill."

Isaid,"Howlonghaveyoubeenherefor?"Hesaid,"Well,ifIdjustdonemytimeinprisonfortheoriginalcrime,Idhavegotfiveyears.IvebeeninBroadmoorfor12years."

SoIsaidtoanurse,DidyouknowthattheU.S.Armyistrainingbumblebeestosniffoutexplosives?WhenIreadmymedicalnotes,Isawtheydwritten:Believesbeescansniffoutexplosives."

Hesaid,"Youknow,IvegottheStockwellStranglerononesideofme,andIvegottheTiptoeThroughtheTulipsrapistontheothersideofme.SoItendtostayinmyroomalotbecauseIfindthemquitefrightening.Andtheytakethatasasignofmadness.TheysayitprovesthatImaloofandgrandiose."
